The Five People You Meet In Heaven (Part 2)

Eddie is in a battlefield where he has been during the Word War 2. He can see the soldiers fighting. He can also hear the sound of bombs and guns. He runs to a big tree to keep himself safe. Suddenly, he hears that a man is talking to him at the tree. He looks up the tree and sees the captain who was his leader in the team during the World War 2. The captain lets him climb up the tree and sits by himself.

The captain is the second people Eddie meets. He tells Eddie that he was born in a military family. He became  a captain when he was young. Actually, he didn’t know how to lead a team to fight in the battlefield. He just wanted everybody in his team stay together and come home together. But that is the war, the solders in his team still died. That is  Eddie’s team.

Eddie still remembers what has happened to them clearly. They were caught by the Japanese soldiers in Philippines. They ate the rice with insect and did  heavy work, which caused one of their members  ill badly. The Japanese killed him by gun. They were so sad and angry. Finally, they escaped by killing the Japanese with rocks. And Eddie burned all house which in the camp. After that, there was a shape of a small child what Eddie saw. He wanted to save the child, but the fire was so heavy. He walked in the house step by step. Suddenly, some planes were flying though the sky over their heads. Eddie was shot. He fell down and he was taken in a car by other members. Eddie has this dream every night after he came home. He always complains to himself that he killed the child who was no business in the war and he lost a perfect left leg, so that he have to stay in Ruby Pier for a hold life. He hates that so much.

The captain tells Eddie, he shot him not the planes in fact. Eddie is shocked and angry. He thinks the captain destroyed his whole life. He pushes the captain down the floor and hits his face. The captain stops him and keeps talking, he tells Eddie he died by the land mines when they wanted t send Eddie to a safe place. At that time, Eddie is silent.

That is the second lesson he has to learn, the captain says. Sacrifice is a part of our life. I sacrificed but my team members alive. You sacrificed your left leg but you alive. The soldiers sacrificed themselves but the people in their countries alive. Don’t complain with your sacrificed, they have their means in your life.

Eddie asks to the captain if he did save the little girl before he died. The captain answers him, he can’t tell him but someone can. The battlefield is changed to a beautiful sunshine beach. The captain says, he hates war, here is his heaven not the battlefield. And the captain is gone. The place where Eddie stays have change again.
